Economist
A stock market, or (equity market), is a private or public market for the trading of company stock and derivatives of company stock at an agreed price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded privately (google definitions). The Dow Jones Industrial average (DJIA), is a trademark for one of the oldest and most widely quoted measures of stock market price movements. The Average is calculated by adding the share prices of 30 large, seasoned firms such as Intel, ExxonMobil, General Electric, and GM and dividing the sum by a figure that is adjusted for such things as stock splits and substitutions. Also called the Dow.(Dictionary.com)
Because of the crashes of these two things, it helped lead to the depression of the 1920's and 30's
